About

Photo of Alex

I'm Alex, a web designer and developer in Paignton. I build websites for local businesses across Devon and the wider South West, alongside my Computer Science degree at the University of Plymouth.

Good looks matter, but what matters more is that your site will actually work: load fast, read well on a phone and make it easy for people to get in touch with you.

You deal with me directly, from the first message to launch. I keep everything in writing, explain things in plain English, and I'll always be honest about what's worth doing for your budget.

Bay Heating & Plumbing

Website concept for a local plumbing company

Visit website (opens in a new tab)

The idea

A homepage concept for a made-up plumbing and heating company in Torbay. People usually arrive with a problem, like a broken boiler or a leak, so the first screen answers two questions straight away: can these people fix it, and can I trust them? The company and its reviews are invented for the demo.

What I focused on

  • Answers first. The headline says what they fix, where and since when, so people know at once they're in the right place.
  • Trust. Customer reviews right next to the headline, with the Gas Safe and OFTEC badges and the Google rating where people look for them.
  • Easy to get in touch. A big click-to-call button, and a message option for people who'd rather write.
  • Plain words. Short, friendly copy in the company's own voice, with no jargon.

HTML, CSS and JavaScript, no frameworks. Responsive from phones to wide screens.

Website concept for a sea kayak tour company

Visit website (opens in a new tab)

The idea

A concept site for a made-up sea kayak tour company at Goodrington Sands, Paignton. It should sell the feeling of being on the water, help people pick the right trip and answer their questions before they book. The company, reviews and prices are invented for the demo.

What I focused on

  • Choosing a tour. Six tours with what people compare first (length, level, price), a full view of each one and a simple booking form.
  • Trust. Reviews you can filter by source, rating and tour, with a rating summary and links to Google and Tripadvisor.
  • A look that belongs to the sea. Colours that run from sand to deep water, with layered wave edges between sections.
  • Calm motion, for everyone. A looping hero video and gentle scroll effects that switch off for people who prefer less motion, plus layouts for every screen and full keyboard use.

Website concept for a balloon decor business

Visit website (opens in a new tab)

The idea

A concept site for a made-up balloon and event decor business in Exeter. Small decor businesses usually live on Facebook, where customers struggle to see prices, check availability or ask for a quote. This site answers those questions before anyone has to send a message. The business, reviews and prices are invented for the demo.

What I focused on

  • A quote in three short steps. Occasion, date, town, colours and contact details, with a custom calendar, a town picker limited to the area covered and a summary to check before sending. Short steps feel quicker on a phone than one long form.
  • Delivery zones on a map. Free within 10 miles of Exeter, a set price beyond. The map is an SVG I made from official ONS boundary data, so it needs no map service or API key. Hovering a town lights up its pin.
  • Clear prices. Packages with "from" prices and a highlighted "Most booked" option. Choosing a package fills in the quote form for you.
  • Services that play themselves. On desktop each service shows its photo and moves on after a few seconds, pausing while you read. On phones it becomes a simple accordion.
  • Reviews with a visible source. The score links to where the reviews come from, because a number without a source isn't convincing.
  • Fast and accessible. Every photo is WebP in several sizes, so a phone downloads a smaller file than a big monitor. Full keyboard use, calmer motion for people who prefer less, alt text on every image and touch targets of at least 44px.

How it works

  1. Tell me what you need

Send a message or use Get a Quote. I'll reply within two working days.

  2. A clear plan and price

I send a short plan in writing: the pages, what's included, the price and the timeline. A 50% deposit books your project in.

  3. Design, then build

You see the design first, with two rounds of changes included. Then I build it and send you a private link to try on your phone.

  4. Launch and 30 days of care

The rest is due before launch. For 30 days after, small text and photo changes are free.
